WHAT IS BITTERNESS
BITTERNESS
Bitterness is actually a pain or grieving in the soul or
spirit of man, caused by an offense of another. There is a pain you can feel in
the body when one receives a cut or trauma to the body or when you are hurt in
the body, that is not bitterness. But when that hurt in the body is caused by
someone, it can lead to hurt in the soul as a result of anger which makes you
feel pain in your soul (mind) until it gets deep into the spirit. You become
grieved in your spirit for what the person has done, to the point that you do
not want to hear of that person in your life anymore. That is Bitterness.
Physical pain to the body could lead to bitterness because you were offended by
the one who caused it and became angry and you did not forgive him/her so the
hurt sinks deep into the soul which makes you feel revengeful wishing evil for
that person.
How to know that you are dealing with Bitterness in your life
The mere fact that you are angry does not necessarily mean
that you are bitter yet. When you are offended by someone and you are hurt then
you get angry to the point of refusing to forgive that person and that hurt
becomes a pain in the soul whereby anytime you hear of the person you remember
the incident that happened and get angry again by also wishing the person not
to go well with him/her. This means that you have bitterness against the
person. Bitterness means that you are troubled in your soul against someone for
what he did to you and will never from your heart wish good for him.
Types of Bitterness
From my search in the word of God, I came across three(3)
types of bitterness according to the Hebrew renderings which are only
translated as bitterness in English.
1. The first one is the
bitterness of taste, which is the bitterness of an eatable or drinkable
substance. That is called the bitterness of the body. (Exodus
15:23; Lamentation 1:4; 3:15)
2. The second one is
bitterness from the loss of a loved one by death or the loss of something dear
to you, such as properties, a business, a son, etc. That is what is called deep
sorrow; the bitterness of the soul. (1Samuel 1:10; Job 10:1;
21:25)
3. The third one is
bitterness against someone or something from an offense wishing the person or
thing evil. You may wish that the person or that thing never existed. That
is the bitterness of the spirit. (Ezekiel 3:14; Hosea 12:14;
Acts 8:23; Romans 3:14)
The one we are considering so much in this article is the
bitterness of the spirit, the third one. It is very dangerous and we must be
careful about it. What can save you from bitterness is love and forgiveness.
Both bitterness of the body and bitterness of the soul can lead to bitterness
of the spirit if they were caused by a person’s negligence or even mistake, and
you become angry making you revengeful that you are not able to forgive that
person.
Effects of Bitterness
Bitterness is what i call the devil's flame. He uses it to damage your relationship with God and with men. The devil uses bitterness to fan all kinds of evil. The sad thing here is that bitterness always mostly affect the
one who is bitter and not the other person. These are some of what bitterness
can do to you who keeps it:
*Bitterness destroys your love.
*Bitterness disturbs your peace of mind.
*Bitterness takes your focus away from the Word of God.
*Bitterness renders you a hypocrite. You may preach love,
mercy, truth, and peace, but because of your bitterness against someone, you
become a hypocrite because you do not practice what you preach.
